AKTUELLT PÅ ENGINEERING.COM: PTC’s Onshape Acquisition: Did SOLIDWORKS Founder Jon Hirschtick Have to Sell?

When engineering.com’s PLM editor, Verdi Ogewell, interviewed SOLIDWORKS and Onshape founder Jon Hirschtick a couple of years ago, Hirschtick said that about 10,000 commercial users were needed to run the business at break-even. This has not been achieved at present. Only half that volume—5,000 users—has been reached, according to PTC. A reasonable guess, therefore, is that Onshape has been operating at a loss during their startup journey. On the other hand, Heppelmann believes that this SaaS concept has gigantic future potential, which means that the price tag—$470 million—can be justified…
