Siemens’ EVP Joe Bohman: ”Xcelerator-as-a-Service and SaaS are Tearing Down Barriers With New Cloud Services for CAD, Simulation, MES/MOM and Manufacturing”

"A COMPLETE SETUP of DIGITAL SaaS TOOLS." Siemens Digital Industries Software is moving ahead in full steam with its SaaS solutions built on the PLM portfolio Xcelerator. All Siemens cloud-based solutions have the letter X as a suffix. This, in turn, is tantamount to them being Xcelerator-as-a-Service solutions, with the cloud as the technical platform.
As PLM&ERP News previously reported from the company's ongoing user event Realize Live Americas in Las Vegas, the PLM solution Teamcenter will be the first service option in the cloud. But there is more to come. In his keynote in front of 2,000 enthusiastic attendees, the company's Teamcenter chief, EVP of PLM Products, Joe Bohman, said that the expansion of the cloud service portfolio continues with the CAD software NX X, the new and very interesting app for manufacturing and shop floor activities Zel X, MOM and MES software Opcenter X, CAE platform Simcenter X and Teamcenter X Essentials (PDM).
The Xcelerator-as-a-Service portfolio, according to Bohman, with the new upcoming additions, brings together the powerful functions of the company's rich software portfolio through purpose-built technology and service experiences that are, "tailored to the requirements of industries and individual users."
“The cloud market will exceed one trillion dollars in 2026 and every CIO (Chief Information Officer) I speak to is intensely interested in what we are doing with the cloud. The answer is Siemens Xcelerator-as-a-Service. We hereby offer our complete suite of digital tools as SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) solutions designed using our digital thread approach, so that everything is connected. We build SaaS solutions that are secure, personalized and customizable with our low-code software Mendix. With this, we contribute to tearing down barriers. Instead, we create platforms that bring together groups of experts, giving people the opportunity to discuss and work together,” stated Joe Bohman during his speech. He added: “Customers tell us they are 33% faster to market with this approach, achieve this at 60% lower IT costs while they still are 100% up-to-dated. Everything with built-in scalability – everything we do is scalable.”
Above all, Bohman emphasized the need to break down barriers in product development. This is done most efficiently with sharp digital tools and it’s clear that the cloud as a technical distribution platform facilitates this type of interconnected process flows.
”Xcelerator-as-a-Service connects all tasks and processes on one platform, giving everyone in the entire value chain the opportunity to work together anywhere, at the same time, with the tools and data they need in one place. These flexible, modular solutions then run on the industry's most robust interoperable data backbone, fully integrating workflows from concept to manufacturing,” Bohman concluded.

The new additions to Siemens Xcelerator-as-a-Service deliver solutions for product development and lifecycle management, cloud-based high-performance simulation and manufacturing management can make a huge difference. As Joe Bohman said, with the cloud as the technical platform this from a digital tool access point of view makes it easier than ever to deal with the long standing desire to break down the barriers between people, departments and external partners. Everything needed to work together anywhere, at the same time, with the tools and data needed is directly accessible in one place.

From Siemens CAD flagship NX to the new shop floor browser-based Zel X
So, what are the new X-capabilities about? Included are–besides Teamcenter X, which will be the first service solution in place–the following solutions:

CAD: NX X thus becomes Siemens’ new cloud-based solution for product design. The software is a cornerstone of the Siemens Xcelerator-as-a-Service cloud-based portfolio. With Bohman’s announcement in Las Vegas, NX X will provide access to product development and design capabilities as a service, which he says, ”allows customers to free up resources so they can scale and focus on innovation.” Through centralized cloud license management, configuration, and capacity provisioning, NX X can simplify IT requirements. Organizations can install NX X on the computer desktop or stream via AWS cloud services where needed, providing great flexibility for distributed teams.

MOM/MES: Opcenter X. This software is a well known entity in the on-premise world, but new as a more accessible SaaS X-solution for manufacturing control, Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) that is now part of the Siemens cloud SaaS Xcelerator portfolio. It also delivers the Siemens Manufacturing Execution System (MES) solution, including things like scheduling, quality and analytics capabilities in a modular, easy-to-deploy and inherently collaborative cloud environment.

Digital Manufacturing: Zel X. Speaking of MOM, MES and shop floor-related solutions, the new app ZEL X is an exciting introduction. ZEL X is described by Siemens as “a next-generation browser-based engineering app to streamline manufacturing and operations on the shop floor. Zel X consolidates software for manufacturing, operations, collaboration, design and simulation (the image above provides an example of this) into a comprehensive, yet lightweight browser-based solution, that delivers value instantly.”

The company’s senior VP of mainstream engineering, John Miller, says in a comment that:

“The manufacturing industry demands open, flexible toolsets that are not only laser-focused on their needs, but are immediate and accessible wherever they need them. Zel X combines Siemens’ expertise and technology-heavy position in the manufacturing, operations, design, simulation and collaboration domains to deliver the next-generation capabilities through the browser that our customers demand. Zel X supports their rapidly changing business with direct toolsets that offer them the full process coverage they need to innovate and gain competitive advantage.”

In short, this is an easy-to-use browser-based solution that delivers value instantly.

Simulation & Analysis: Simcenter X is also a novelty as a SaaS option. Here you get access to the functions of the company’s CAE platform, Simcenter, which is one of the market’s strongest cohesive portfolios of simulation and test solutions, in the cloud. The first of the Simcenter software will be STAR-CCM+, also part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio. Bohman says Simcenter X, “enables engineers in companies of all sizes to access a cloud-based virtual engineering desktop environment for modeling and post-processing combined with a highly scalable high-performance computing (HPC) environment.”

cPDm/PLM Teamcenter X Essentials: With this cPDm (collaborative Product Definition management) software in Siemens SaaS format, Joe Bohman claims that Teamcenter X Essentials becomes the most affordable way to access Teamcenter X, for PLM management. ”The solution enables companies, from start-ups to global enterprises, to quickly start digital transformation and adopt PLM and, when ready, rapidly grow innovation capabilities,” said the Siemens Teamcenter manager.
