AEROSPACE & DEFENSE: NX CAD and Teamcenter Key Components in New Innovation Agreement Between Siemens and BAE Systems

NEW METHODS for DIGITAL MANUFACTURING supports BAE's Industry 4.0 initiative, FACTORY of the FUTURE. There are always interesting things happening in the PLM market during the holidays, big deals that have a tendency to disappear in the "summer noise" after all. One current such very interesting new agreement is the one between market leader Siemens Digital Industries Software and the military industry giant, BAE Systems. Under this agreement signed at the end of July, BAE Systems will deploy the latest digital technology from Siemens Xcelerator, in this case both from the open business platform and the PLM portfolio, both of the same name. The goal is to, "transform engineering and manufacturing processes through FalconWorks, the research and development business within BAE Systems' Air sector."
A backdrop in this deal is that the collaboration on the PLM, automation and hardware side between Siemens Digital Industries and BAE Systems is nothing new. It has been going on for decades, including a range of technology initiatives, software and manufacturing competence development. But a new agreement is now in place, one whose essence is collaboration around innovation in engineering and manufacturing technologies, embracing digital transformation, while leveraging digital opportunities across program lifecycles.
The five-year agreement is designed to explore and develop a strategic plan for future engineering and factory capabilities across design and manufacturing disciplines within BAE Systems. This builds on and leverages the latest deployment of Siemens NX CAD software for product development and Teamcenter's cPDm (collaborative Product Definition management)/PLM solutions, from Siemens PLM portfolio Xcelerator. Edge computing solutions and technology validation have also been successfully used in several catapult development and technology centers.
Brian Holliday, CEO of Siemens Digital Industries in the UK and Ireland, commented: "This agreement builds on a well-established, successful collaboration between BAE Systems and Siemens, both players who share ambitions to drive manufacturing and innovation development. The technology is transforming manufacturing at BAE Systems to develop at a faster pace and at the forefront of Industry 4.0 in the UK." Iain Minton, Technology Capability Delivery Director at BAE Systems, also points to this as one of the most important aspects of the agreement: "Absolutely, collaborations like this help us develop and invest in digital wire enabling technologies in a much more integrated and seamless way," he says.
A general observation in this area is that Siemens Digital Industries is one of the really large players in the aerospace & defense segment, for example a few years ago it signed a large agreement with the American giant Lockheed Martin (a link to this can be found in the article on PLM&ERP News).

As mentioned above the framework for collaboration between BAE Systems and Siemens Digital Industries follows decades of successful partnership between the two companies. This has included the development and delivery of a range of Siemens technologies, knowledge sharing between engineers, and joint presentations of solutions at industry forums.
Through the now announced agreement, Siemens Digital Industries and BAE Systems commit to collaborate regionally and internationally in the areas of sustainability, industrial digitization and supply chain modernization, to develop a framework to accelerate the commercial application benefits of BAE Systems in technology exploitation and adaptation.
Siemens and BAE Systems will also continue previous initiatives to innovate and develop new methods of digital manufacturing that support the Factory of the Future initiative within BAE systems.
”The collaboration is a good example of Siemens’ broader vision for how we want to work with customers via Siemens Xcelerator, which is based on a digital portfolio, ecosystem thinking and a digital marketplace. The principle is that by working together in a focused way, we can accelerate time to business and sustainability benefits through technology,” notes Brian Holliday.

Lockheed Martin is another prominent example of a recent Siemens Digital Industries Software win that PLM&ERP News previously reported on.

Ultimately, this agreement is another good example of how aerospace leaders–Lockheed Martin being another prominent example that PLM&ERP News previously reported on (link below)–are choosing to partner with Siemens and pick up the tools in the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio as the foundation of their digital transformation.

Back to the BAE Systems deal Iain Minton (in the picture on the left) says that Siemens’ understanding of the complexity of BAE Systems’ operating environment is one of the foundations on which the agreement rests.
“With these solutions, we can very quickly get an idea to mature to the point where it is put into practice, for example when we are thinking about implementing/optimizing new engineering, support or manufacturing capabilities. That is the real value of this collaboration – the trust and understanding we have built together creates a work

powerful force to drive results for the aviation sector.”

The agreement builds on a well-established, successful collaboration between BAE Systems and Siemens, companies which share ambitions to promote manufacturing careers and innovation. Technology is transforming manufacturing at an accelerated pace.

The comprehensive digital twin a basic point
In general, Siemens Digital Industries’ software, hardware and services from the Siemens Xcelerator business platform should be said to be based on what the company usually calls, ”the comprehensive digital twin.” This concept enables companies to optimize their design, engineering and manufacturing processes to transform today’s ideas into tomorrow’s sustainable products. From chips to entire systems, from product to process, in all industries, Siemens Digital Industries Software.
Ben Sheath, VP and CEO, UK and Ireland, at Siemens Digital Industries Software, sums it up like this:
“This extends a two-decade relationship with BAE Systems as they continue to deliver on strategic plans to build the factory of the future. We look forward to working with the team at BAE Systems as they harness the power of Industry 4.0 to help achieve the company’s digital transformation goals.”
