Automotive Leads the Way in Strong Increase of Industrial Robots in Sweden

...but despite a 13% increase in 2023, Sweden falls in the global robot density statistics. The robotization trend continues to show strong growth, according to the International Federation of Robotics' (IFR) latest World Robotics report. The global total for 2023 puts the number of registered units at 4,281,585 units operating in factories worldwide in 2023; an increase of 10 percent from the previous year.
"The new World Robotics statistics show an all-time high in the number of industrial robots automating production around the world," said Marina Bill, President of the IFR.
“The annual installation figure of 541,302 units in 2023 is the second highest in history and just 2 percent lower than the 2022 record of 552,946 units installed.”
These figures mean that for the third consecutive year the number of robot installations exceeds half a million units, according to IFR. By region, 70% of all newly installed robots in 2023 were installed in Asia, 17% in Europe and 10% in the Americas. From a Swedish point of view, too, it looks good with an increase in 2023 of 13 percent, which means that the total number of units in Swedish industry amounts to 17,436. But despite this, Sweden has fallen in the statistics from previously having a leading position to fifth place in terms of robot density in the manufacturing industry. The robot density, is a relative measure showing the number of operative robots per 10,000 employees in the manufacturing industry. It is a critical measure of the industry's degree of automation and industrial efficiency. Globally, Sweden has now fallen to fifth place and is behind Denmark, Japan, China and South Korea.
"This development marks a significant challenge for Sweden's competitiveness within the general manufacturing industry," comments the Swedish Industrial Robot Association, SWIRA.
But SWIRA also notes that on the plus side, "Sweden is strengthening its position as one of the world's most automated countries. In 2023, the number of new robot installations in Sweden reached a record high of 1,849 units, an increase of 13 percent compared to the previous year.” A figure that is also believed to constitute, "a historic milestone for Swedish industry."
But as said above, the downside is, according to SWIRA, that, "the decline in Sweden's position may affect the country's ability to compete effectively in the manufacturing sector." SWIRA further writes that in Sweden it is the automotive industry and its subcontractors that in 2023 are responsible for the largest increase, with as many as 440 new robot installations – an impressive increase of 85 percent compared to 2022.

The figures for 2023 in Sweden mean that the automotive sector has now overtaken the metal industry as the largest user of robotics, where in the latter industry segment installations decreased by 25 percent to 428 units. The rubber and plastics industry also saw some decline with 233 new installations, down 7%. Most robot installations during the year were in handling and machine service (1,374 units, up 24%), followed by welding applications (223 units, up 20%).

In 2023, the automotive industry overtook the metal industry (pictured) as the largest user of industrial robots in Sweden.

China has the largest robot market

Globally and in absolute terms, China is thus the largest market, with 276,288 new robot installations in 2023, which corresponds to 51% of the global number. The share of domestically produced robots in China has increased to 47%, compared to 28% in the past decade. China’s operational robot stock was close to 1.8 million units in 2023. Demand for industrial robots in the country is expected to continue to increase sharply in 2024.

• Furthermore, Japan is the world’s second largest industrial robot market, with 46,106 units installed in 2023. US is third with 37,587, and South Korea is the fourth with 31,444 robots installed in the same year.

• Germany is the largest robot market in Europe, where robot installations increased by 7% to 28,355 units.

• In the US, 37,587 robots were installed, which was a decrease of 5%. Demand from the automotive industry fell by 15%, while the metal and machinery industry increased its installations by 8%.

China is the largest global robot market, with 276,288 new robot installations in 2023, accounting for 51% of the global total.

Accelerated growth is predicted for 2025
IFR writes in its near-term outlook that it expects the global economic downturn to bottom out this year, 2024, with global robot installations leveling off at 541,000 units. It expects growth to accelerate in 2025 and continue in 2026 and 2027. There are no signs that the overall long-term growth trend will end in the near future, IFR argued.

For the Swedish part, SWIRA believes in its comment that the declining position in terms of robot density, ”may affect the country’s ability to compete effectively in nom manufacturing sector and underlines the need for increased investment in automation and technological innovation. To regain a leading position, strategic investments and political initiatives are required that promote the development and implementation of advanced robotics in industry.”

In its forecast for the coming years, SWIRA writes:

“Despite an expected decline in demand for robots in 2024, a recovery and moderate growth is predicted in subsequent years. It is estimated that Sweden’s GDP will grow by 0.6% in 2024 and accelerate to 2.6% in 2025. Investments in the automotive industry, announced for 2024 and 2025, are expected to contribute to this growth.”
