GREEN HYDROGEN: New Configurator and Simulation Software Simplifies Hydrogen Plant Design with Generative Artificial Intelligence

About SIEMENS' new HYDROGEN PLANT CONFIGURATOR in combination with digital tools such as COSMOS, gPROMS, and the simulation solution SIMIT. Green hydrogen is one of the factors that can be of decisive importance for how industrial operations will be able to reach tough sustainability goals. The advantages of hydrogen in the energy sector are several; such as that the use of hydrogen does not cause greenhouse gas emissions. Once produced, hydrogen generates, for example, electrical power in a fuel cell and emits only water vapor and hot air. But there is more – hydrogen can be used to produce other gases, as well as liquid fuels. In parallel existing infrastructure, such as gas transport and storage, can be reused for hydrogen.
These are some of the most obvious advantages from a sustainability perspective, something that Siemens has taken note of. To accelerate the use of hydrogen for energy purposes, the company is today launching an interesting solution that aims to support companies in the hydrogen industry with software tools based on generative artificial intelligence. Especially in hydrogen production, these new solutions are intended to significantly simplify the design, construction and automation of hydrogen production facilities, enabling a faster scale-up of hydrogen production.
The new Hydrogen Plant Configurator is an intelligent chatbot based on generative artificial intelligence, which enables users to more quickly and easily create plant designs for hydrogen production. In an iterative process, the configurator is fed with the desired design characteristics of a production facility. The AI then creates seamless block flow diagrams up to precise layouts of the system units and connections. In addition, the AI can predict plant-specific key figures such as possible power consumption, heat generation and a comprehensive list of the most important components. The data generated in this way represents the basic concept of a facility. It can then be transferred to engineering solutions such as Siemens COSMOS and gPROMS - for example, to automatically create pipe and instrument diagrams - or to simulation software such as Siemens SIMIT.

With the Hydrogen Plant Configurator it is easier than ever to plan and operate a more sustainable hydrogen plant and thus lay the foundation for efficient production.”
Siemens is also launching an AI-based tool for the project planning phase of hydrogen plants, COSMOS AI engineering assistant. What are the features of this, the configurator, gPROMS and SIMIT?

With COMOS, Siemens claims to be, “the only company in the world to offer a software solution for the integrated management of civil engineering projects – from construction, operation and modernization to decommissioning.”

In the new concept for hydrogen plant design, the COSMOS AI engineering assistant is thus launched, which, based on the capabilities of COSMOS, can create equipment specifications and diagrams based on natural language descriptions and automatically supplement or correct models and drawings. The assistant can also provide support during multi-domain phases in design or cross-product workflows by converting models, drawings and information structures, for example for simulation programs such as SIMIT from Siemens. The SIMIT Simulation Platform enables extensive testing of automation applications and provides a realistic training environment for operators – even before the plant starts up.

On top of this, users can also use COSMOS AI to retrieve information from technology-relevant products – at their own request or suggested by the assistant. In this way, the assistant provides answers to documentation, specifications or technical details. By embedding images, scans or PDF files, it can also proactively deliver relevant resources and turn them into accurate diagrams and models.

In the case of the Siemens gPROMS Process, it is a next-generation process modeling environment that supports the entire concept-to-operation process design cycle; which can therefore also be linked to the new design approach for hydrogen production solutions.

AI upgrade for the distributed control system
In order to then simplify the automation of processes in hydrogen plants, Siemens is also launching an innovative module for the Simatic PCS neo distributed control system: SFC Generation. The module is integrated into the process control system and can create so-called sequential function diagrams (SFC) using generative artificial intelligence. These diagrams provide a visual representation of process logic and allow users to easily manage complex workflows. This is possible based on specific prompts or by copying a prose process description into the module’s chat window.

The Hydrogen Plant Configurator will be available on the Siemens Xcelerator Marketplace from the end of calendar year 2024, while COSMOS AI and SFC Generation are expected to be available from the beginning of 2025. Siemens will present the new AI tools at this year’s Achema trade show in Frankfurt 10-14 June 2024 (hall 11).
