Taming Manufacturing Complexity: How Northern Timber Giant SCA Wood Achieved Seamless Group-Wide OEE

With Dutch private equity firm Main Capital as new majority owner, Swedish Gothenburg-based Good Solutions is set to conquer the European OEE market.
In the pursuit of manufacturing excellence, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) systems have become a cornerstone for driving both operational throughput and bottom-line profitability. In the industrial sector, these two metrics are inextricably linked: every reduction in downtime, every uptick in machine speed, and every marginal gain in quality serves as a direct lever for financial performance.
As we move through 2026, the hallmark of a cutting-edge OEE solution is no longer just data collection—it’s intelligence. Today’s industry leaders demand AI-driven analytics capable of automatically identifying root causes for stoppages, IoT-enabled deployments that can be scaled across facilities in mere days, and mobile-first interfaces that deliver real-time alerts directly to an operator’s tablet or smartphone.
Without efficient processes—indicated by low OEE—profitability suffers due to waste. Conversely, without focusing on profitability via OEE, a company risks being "efficient" at the wrong things. While 60% OEE is typical for many–a 85% rating is considered world-class–highlighting massive, untapped potential for both enhanced efficiency and improved profitability.
These factors have served as key guiding principles in today’s case study on PLM&ERP News, highlighting how European industry leader SCA Wood has upgraded the OEE systems across several of its facilities, including those in Bollsta, Tunadal, Munksund, Gällö, and Stugun. As a central player in the timber industry with a turnover exceeding SEK 5 billion ($540 million), the company specializes in wood processing, operating sawmills and producing materials such as exterior cladding and other construction products.
A transition of this magnitude is no simple step, and such scale inherently brings a certain level of complexity. However, with a Good Solutions platform now in place, the company has a solution that drives production monitoring, loss analysis, and improvement work across sawmills, trimming plants, planing mills, and paint shops.
The supplier, Good Solutions, and its web-based platform stand as formidable player in both the Swedish and European markets. Notably, the Gothenburg-based company reached a major milestone in March 2026, when Dutch firm Main Capital Partners stepped in as a new majority owner. This strategic investment is designed to fuel Good Solutions’ growth trajectory, with a clear focus on expanding its footprint beyond the Nordics into the international arena. While global heavyweights in PLM and factory automation—such as SIEMENS, with its robust Opcenter suite, and Dassault Systèmes, with DELMIA—offer highly effective alternatives, SCA ultimately chose to partner with Good Solutions.
"It has been a complex rollout across multiple sites, involving demanding technical requirements and the need to meet central IT standards. Good Solutions worked closely with us, which made a successful system replacement possible," says Bengt-Olof Westin, IT Application at SCA Wood. He adds, "An excellent dialogue with their delivery consultants made it easy for our operators to adopt the new system." Click the headline to read the full case study on PLM&ERP News.

Replacing OEE systems across multiple sites is a significant undertaking. For SCA Wood, this was about far more than just swapping out a technical solution. The goal was to enhance production monitoring, facilitate improvement initiatives, and establish a more standardized way of working across all locations. As a leading European forest products company, the production demands are rigorous, requiring comparable data, clearer tracking, and a reliable platform for daily performance monitoring.

The new OEE platform needed to function across the entire organization while ensuring a rapid, high-speed rollout. Key requirements included operator-friendly usability, actionable reports for decision-makers, and the robust functionality necessary to support daily production tracking from day one.

Complex Multi-Site Transition
SCA Wood required more than just a new system; the business needed a platform backed by a clear product development roadmap, close support, and long-term security. Simultaneously, there was a distinct need to generate more comparable data across sites, standardize workflows, and streamline daily performance tracking.
The transition was complex, largely because it spanned multiple facilities with unique local conditions, high data volumes, and demanding requirements. Implementation had to occur without disrupting production or losing operational visibility during the transition.

Other key factors included the need for a platform that served the entire organization: user-friendly for operators, capable of providing relevant reports for decision-makers, and robust enough to support daily production monitoring from day one.
”It has been a complex rollout across multiple sites, with high technical demands and the need to meet central IT requirements. Good Solutions worked closely with us, which enabled a successful system transition,” says Bengt-Olof Westin.

Controlled Rollout Ensures Seamless Transition
SCA Wood and Good Solutions executed a facility-by-facility implementation, allowing for rigorous data validation, setup adjustments, and a sustainable pace. Running legacy and new solutions in parallel validated outcomes and provided confidence for the go-live.
”The implementation process itself was crucial,” notes Westin, emphasizing the need for close dialogue, clear project management, and quality delivery. It was about more than just installing new software; it was about ensuring the platform worked in daily production.
”It went well, and Good Solutions’ delivery consultants played a vital role. We had great dialogue, and it was easy for our operators to embrace the new system,” he says, adding that the user-friendliness became immediate, allowing operators to start working immediately without extensive training.

Joakim Norlander, Production Manager at SCA Timber Bollsta Sawmill, echoes the value of this seamless launch. ”Exactly, I didn’t conduct any formal training with the operators. They were accustomed to downtime coding in the previous system. I simply set up the tablets, logged into the web application, and they started using the platform. That’s true usability!” says Norlander.

Beyond their new OEE installation, SCA Wood operates several industry-leading facilities that excel in digital innovation. At the Bollsta sawmill, for instance, SCA utilizes a digital twin of the entire production workflow, leveraging vast datasets and advanced automated processes. With all the pieces in place—including an unrivaled planer mill and some of the market’s most sophisticated technology—SCA is, in short, ready to develop the sawmill of the future.

Seamless System Transition Boosts Performance Across Five Sites
SCA Wood has successfully deployed the Good Solutions platform across all five of its production sites, marking a major milestone in their operational efficiency journey. With the new system in place, SCA Wood now boasts modern, unified platforms that drive production monitoring, loss analysis, and continuous improvement in daily operations across the board.
The rollout was executed with precision, allowing operators to quickly adapt to the new workflow. The organization now boasts a system that perfectly balances local needs with the ambition for standardized, data-driven processes across all sites.
“With the Good Solutions platform in place, we have the system and support we need. It gives us everything necessary to pinpoint improvements, understand trends, and strengthen our production monitoring,” says Joakim Norlander.

Building on the Rollout
The next phase involves expanding the use of the Good Solutions platform across daily operations, focusing on analysis, continuous improvements, and digital checklists for maintenance, changeovers, and procedures. This ensures accurate execution, along with structured, seamless follow-ups.
“Our ongoing dialogue with the Good Solutions Product Owner is incredibly valuable,” concludes Joakim Norlander. “It allows us to provide direct feedback on product development, understand the roadmap, and collaborate even more closely on future advancements.”
