AI and Digitalization in Focus when HCLTech Bags Renewed Strategic Billion Dollar IT Deal with VOLVO Group

PANKAJ TAGRA, Corporate VP at HCLTech: “An agreement that strengthen HCLTech’s leadership in global automotive.” IT consultant HCLTech has announced that it has signed an agreement with “one of the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles, headquartered in Sweden.” The name of this giant is not disclosed in the press release, but it is not a wild guess that it is about Volvo Group. Not least because the release adds that the agreement was signed with, “one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks, buses, construction equipment, marine and industrial engines and comprehensive transportation solutions.”
In any case, under the renewed and expanded multi-year contract HCLTech will enhance and modernize Volvo Group’s IT infrastructure and develop AI-driven services. By leveraging its proprietary GenAI-led service transformation platform, AI Force, HCLTech will moreover deliver platform-based managed services, hyper automation and full-stack observability. The AI-powered solutions will enable ”one-click provisioning of IT services and will help optimize operational efficiency and enhance the employee and customer experience.”
On the bottom line, this means that Volvo Group is now modernizing and improving its IT infrastructure and at the same time transforming its digital core services. Additionally, the development of cutting-edge sustainability solutions is on the agenda.
“This renewal and expanded scope reflect the strong foundation we’ve built together over the years. The expansion of this strategic agreement further reinforces HCLTech’s leadership in the global automotive vertical, which is amongst the company's key growth areas,” notes Pankaj Tagra, Corporate VP at HCLTech.
The background behind today’s agreement is that in 2016, the Volvo Group sold its external IT operations to HCLTech, a deal that meant that IT operations were taken over by HCLTech and that Volvo outsourced its IT infrastructure management to the technology consultant. Incidentally, Volvo Cars has also followed in similar footsteps with HCLTech as a strategic supplier of engineering services, with a focus on driving innovation and digital transformation.
The press material about the renewed agreement between HCLTech and Volvo does not say anything about the financial size of the deal, but when HCL bought the Volvo Group's external IT operations for $138 million in 2015, the acquisition was estimated, according to various sources, to generate between $1-1.75 billion in revenue over a five-year period.
When it comes to product development and PLM/PDM tools, it can be noted that Volvo Group primarily works on PTC's Windchill platform and PTC's Creo as a group-wide CAD and PLM environment. This also includes the integration of PTC's IIoT and AR solutions, such as ThingWorx and Vuforia.

It is no small partner that Volvo Group has now chosen to continue to ally itself with. HCLTech has more than 223,000 employees globally in 60 countries, delivering industry-leading capabilities centered around digitalization, engineering, cloud and AI, powered by a broad portfolio of technology services and products.
The company works with customers across virtually all major industry verticals and provides industry solutions for financial services, manufacturing, life sciences and healthcare, high technology, semiconductors, telecom and media, retail, and consumer products and public services.
Consolidated revenues for the 12-month period ending June 2025 totaled $14 billion.

Extension and expansion of ten-year agreement from 2016
The collaboration with Volvo Group is originally based on a ten-year outsourcing agreement for the IT business from 2016. This included a technology transformation plan for thousands of applications, data centers and servers. As well as the establishment of a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Gothenburg to support Volvo’s global IT customers, with a focus on manufacturing, R&D, and digital and IoT functions. With the new extended and expanded engineering services agreement, HCLTech is expected to contribute to an acceleration of the digital transformation of the Volvo Group in areas such as autonomous driving, electrification and digitalization of vehicles and services.
“We are delighted to be a trusted digital transformation partner and contribute to the client’s growth strategy. We look forward to leveraging our full-stack technology portfolio to build a future-ready digital foundation,” commented Jagadeshwar Gattu, President of Digital Foundation Services at HCLTech, in reference to the recently signed agreement with Volvo Group.

Central principles for the Group’s improvement work
Generally for Volvo Group, the company’s production system containing five core principles, called the Volvo Production System (VPS), remains central to the Group’s continuous improvement work. As such, it is also something that affects what HCLTech has to develop. The VPS framework deals with key areas such as teamwork, process stability, built-in quality, Just-in-Time (JIT) principles and continuous improvement to achieve world-class performance and customer satisfaction.

Within the Group’s heavy truck production, Volvo Group Trucks Technology (GTT) is a central part responsible for technical and product development of trucks, including technical research, engine development, product design and all technical and product development connected to the truck business for all truck brands within the Group.
GTT also supports aftermarket products and collaborates globally with other parts of the Group to deliver technical products and services. This also includes global teams focused on developing electromobility and hydrogen-powered trucks, along with continuous advancements in areas such as autonomous transportation solutions and improving truck safety, efficiency and connectivity.
