AUTOMOTIVE/Software management: Motorcycle manufacturer KTM replaces two systems with PTC’s ALM solution Codebeamer

VOLKSWAGEN Group has also invested heavily in Codebeamer within PLM/ALM – Application Lifecycle Management. Just in time for the start of this year's autumn season, the PLM developer PTC announces that it has received an interesting order for the ALM (Application Lifecycle Management) solution Codebeamer, which the company purchased in 2023. It is one of Europe's leading manufacturers of high-performance on- and off-road motorcycles, KTM, which invests in PTC's Codebeamer as a platform for software and hardware development. The solution will be standardized globally within the entire KTM Group.
The now purchased software will replace two existing systems with Codebeamer and consolidate the various workflows into a single, efficient platform. Initially, KTM will use Codebeamer for E/E (Electrical/Electronic systems) and ePowerpack systems to improve cross-functional collaboration and accelerate time to market for newly developed products. In a second step, the company then plans to expand Codebeamer use to complete vehicles. This will make Codebeamer a key component of the company's design and development processes.
Just as in automotive in general, the importance of software for all types of vehicles, motorcycles included, is increasing. This means that the work of integrating, developing and maintaining increasingly complex software takes up ever larger pieces of the development work and costs. In light of this, the growth potential for PTC's Codebeamer, both in terms of the size of the license revenue and its number, looks very good. Among other things, as PLM&ERP News previously reported, the Volkswagen Group invested heavily in Codebeamer at the end of last year. This can be seen as an important indication of where the industry is headed: Software and electrification represent the future of the automotive industry, and how to implement and leverage these two factors together will be critical to better meet customer expectations and provide a superior driving experience.
”KTM's goal is to maintain and continuously expand our leading position in motorcycle development. To achieve this, it is crucial to bring high-quality innovations to the market at an increasingly rapid pace. The integration of Codebeamer into our workflows will help us implement high-quality and efficient development processes,” KTM writes in a press release.

Today’s announced agreement is also of strategic interest, not least for PTC, which can now cash in on an extension of an already existing long-term relationship with KTM. And as noted in the introduction, the investment in Codebeamer aims to centralize and optimize KTM’s engineering processes in both hardware and software development.

The sights are set on a unified platform for product and software development
The introduction of Codebeamer is intended to further optimize internal collaboration by providing a unified platform for product and software development. This eliminates the need for internal data exchange between different systems and will significantly increase the speed and quality of project implementation.

“KTM’s decision to choose Codebeamer as an ALM platform confirms the value of our strategy to accelerate digital transformation in the dynamic automotive industry,” summarizes Christoph Bräuchle, senior VP and head of PTC’s ALM segment. He adds: ”It is a special motivation for us to support KTM in the development of its fascinating and innovative products with our solution.”

VW a significant deal for PTC
As for Volkswagen’s at the end of 2023 announced commitment to Codebeamer, the solution itself has already been used within VW for a couple of years, but only in pockets along with the other tools. But with the decision made last year, the different parts of the VW family have decided that they will all use the same, common tool, and Codebeamer will be that tool.

The venture also represents a significant deal for PTC, bigger than the CAD and PLM business it has had on the powertrain side of the entire VW family. VW is now one of PTC’s largest customers with an installed footprint across CAD Creo), PLM (Windchill), ALM (Codebeamer) and SLM (Service Lifecycle Management – with PTC’s Servigistics, e.g. spare parts management).
